Print them out as big as you can, at least 300 dpi, on the best printer you can find.
Obviously colour charts are unlikely to reproduce faithfully unless you have access to high end printing hardware. If you want to really get into testing, I heartily recommend a visit to the IMATEST website – they are way ahead of the curve when it comes to this sort of thing, and they can even create custom charts to your specific needs.

A truly classic portrait lens. Perhaps the classic?

The 80mm f1.8 Pancolar is a coveted and much loved closeup lens with excellent performance and a wonderful look. Capable of throwing your background beautifully out of focus to isolate the subject and achieve the fabled ‘3D effect’, or ‘Zeiss pop’ for which the manufacturer has become famous. Stunning bokeh. Great micro-contrast. Pretty hard to find.

Our two manifestations of this divine lens have recently had their delicate aperture mechanisms totally rebuilt, gears serviced and lubed with synthetic helicoid grease, glass cleaned, and focus collimated by senior ‘Lens Doctor’ Eddie Houston, so they really are as awesome as the glorious day they descended from heaven.

Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 28mm “Hollywood” f2.0

From the movies, through the stills era, and back again.
This superior lens design has ruled for over 40 years & counting!

The “Hollywood” nickname comes from the original manifestation of this optical formula – a Zeiss cinematography lens. For us mortal folks, it was also manufactured for Contax, Nikon, Pentax and the Rollei SL35 system as far back as 1970. Consisting of 9 elements in 8 groups, the 2/28 design implements a floating element, resulting in better closeup performance. Minimum focus is 25cm. Excellent flare rejection. Fast too.

A great workhorse in a useful focal length that for some reason has proved tricky for designers. There just aren’t that many truly great 28mm lenses out there. It’s OK though. There is this one.

Made in West Germany, with T* multicoating, natürlich.

  • The law actually forbids us from providing insurance directly, since you would have no choice of providers, and this would be illegal mis-selling of insurance!
  • We need to know that your production is adequately covered for loss of, or damage to our gear.
  • Insurance (to full replacement value) is the responsibility / liability of the production. ‘Full Replacement Value’ is calculated at 25x hire price (before discounts).
  • For student productions, this means a copy of your college insurance policy, or a confirmation email from an appropriate staff member, specifically detailing that equipment hired from third parties (like us) is covered when used in student productions.
  • If you destroy / damage/ lose something, and your insurance does not pay up, then the hirer will be liable to pay for it him / her self. So please check the small print!
  • Insurance is boring. But film making is often a chaotic and inherently risky endeavour. Have a proper plan in place for when stuff goes wrong. Accidents happen. Stuff goes missing. That’s what insurance is for.

  • Hire period is 24 hours. So if you pick up at 7pm the night before your shoot, we need the lenses back at 7pm the evening after your shoot.
  • Collection / drop off from Ealing, West London. We can do deliveries and pickups to your location or production office, but only by prior arrangement.
  • We are usually flexible over collection/drop off times, but if you are going to be late returning, please let us know ASAP or you may be charged an extra day.
